How to Calculate How Much Wallpaper Do you Need

Step-by-Step Guide How to Calculate How Much Wallpaper Do you Need

So you have found the perfect wallpaper for your project. To ensure a hassle-free installation process you will need to measure your walls and to calculate how much wallpaper you need. Also, measuring and calculating wallpaper quantity accurately is essential to ensure you purchase the right amount and avoid unnecessary waste or shortages. Whether you are planning to wallpaper large spaces or a small area, the process is basically the same, and can be easily done using few simple tools.

Tip: It’s important to order all the wallpaper you need at the same time together because there could be slight variations between batches. It is important to have wallpaper from the same batch number even for white wallpaper. You can find the batch number printed on the wallpaper roll.

Step 1: Prepare Your Tools to Measure Your Walls

  • Measuring tape or a digital laser measure.
  • A pen or a pencil.
  • Notepad or any device to record your measurements.
  • Calculator.

Step 2: Measure Your Area Perimeter

Using your measuring tape, measure the total perimeter of the area you want to wallpaper in metres, including any doors and windows. Divide this measurement by the width of the wallpaper you have chosen, e.g. if the area you want to cover is 12m wide and the wallpaper is 0.55m wide, divide 12 by 0.55.

Step 3: Measure the Height of the Area

Take the height measurement of the area in metres and multiply it by the number of widths needed. Divide that number by the length of the wallpaper roll – for example 10m – and you’ll have the number of rolls needed. Don’t forget -always double check your measurements and if you are not sure ask your wallpaper installer for help.

Calculate Wallpaper Quantity:

Example:

2.5m (height of room) x 18.5 (room width ÷ by wallpaper roll width) = 46.25

46.25 ÷ 10m (length of the wallpaper roll) = 4.62

Do I need to subtract doors and windows when calculating wallpaper?

You do not need to subtract surface area for windows or doors since it’s better to have some extra wallpaper than too little, unless there are an excessive number of windows and doors.
